- ch 2: 2 families murdered as they slept in their beds, Ratcliffe highway
- ch 2: a rich old man murdered by his son, Charing Cross
- ch 2: Johnnie born
- ch 1: Equity and Law meet - Equity pays Law to help him find someone who has a document. Law is unprincipled (who are they?)
- ch 2: Johnnie asks the gardner (Mr. Pimlott) what he is doing and what his various tools are for.
- ch 2: a stranger arrives at the gate asking for a handout but Bissett convinces Johnnie's mother to send him away. Johnnie is a young boy at this time (about 4 or 5)
- ch 2: Johnnie's mom receives a letter and another one in an envelope inside it with the letter C on the outside. She puts both letters in a silver letter case that was given to her by her father and has Johnnie place the case in the parlor. The case contains a design of 5 roses, which is also on their silverware. The letters were from Uncle Martin. [Martin Fortisque?]
- ch 3: Johnnie wakes up in the night and sees the stranger from earlier that day at his window. The stranger warns him to keep quiet, and not say who he was, or he will kill him.
- Ch 2: Johnnie has just escaped the confinement which has imprisoned him and he is now remembering the events in his life up to now.
