Feb Geocaching

February 29, 7:20 PM  Geocaching

There was a special event set up for this evening that permitted everyone who was looking to fill in a find for February 29 to complete that requirement by attending the event.

It was also an opportunity to meet many fellow geocachers. Very nice. I was able to add 10 dates to February this month and now have only 4 more to try for (for February) next year.

February 28, 1:00 PM  Geocaching

I drove a short distance to a new cache in west Lethbridge.

Another find for a day with no previous finds.

February 27, 1:00 PM  Geocaching

I drove out to Coaldale to make a quick find of a new cache. This was my first cache for this day of the year.

There are 2 days left in February and I need to log a find for both of them. Fortunately there are 2 caches in Lethbridge so I should be able to end the month with only 4 days without a registered find. I should be able to complete this next year.

February 26, 3:00 PM Geocaching

Two new geocaches were created in Lethbridge while we were in Hawaii. Another two appeared within driving distance. The roads are snow covered at the moment so I decided to walk to one of the Lethbridge caches.

This is a premium members cache so there is no link to the cache website. This is the fourth of a series of caches whose names are the letters of the word LETHBRIDGE. Each cache contains a numeric "clue" that should help one find the final cache in the series. So far this February I have found caches on 21 of the possible 29 days. I need to find caches on the remaining days for this month. This find makes it 22 different days with at least one find.

February 19, 5:30 PM Geocaching (Hawaii)

I went geocaching in the afternoon and found 2 caches:

     * GC1TC6X - Geckos in Paradise - Kamuela Anakala

     * GC6F0C - Life is But a Dream

These were my first two caches in the state of Hawaii. The first one was also the furthest west (from the Prime Meridian) of all the caches that I have found: W 157° 49.401. Keep in mind that the maximum possible is W180°. I have now found caches in 9 different states - not too impressive, but one more than I had before.

February 16, 11:00 am Geocaching

I had a few geocaches loaded into my Garmin Montana 600 and quickly drove to a nearby one this morning. This turned out to be a micro (small camo film canister) in a spruce tree. A quick find once I determined which tree was the likely candidate. This was my first find for a February 16. The next open day when I need a find is February 24.

February 8, 11:00 am Geocaching

A new cache appeared yesterday. That was welcome news as I was hoping that one would appear so I can fill in today's date on my calendar grid.

It was well-hid under the dead pine needles at the base of the tree. I now have logged finds for the next seven days, so will be taking a bit of a break.

February 7, 8:00 am Geocaching

A new cache appeared on the map this morning so I headed out as soon as it was light.

This turned out to be a FTF. It also was my first find for a February 7, bringing my total number of February days with finds to 19.

I am always grateful when a new cache appears within easy driving distance from home.

February 3, 2:00 PM Geocaching

I drove to an area NE of Claresholm to look for this cache about an early homestead site.

The sun was shining and the countryside was brilliant. Find #1217.

February 2, 11:30 am Geocaching

I have identified 3 caches within a hundred kilometres of home that I can try to find. The closest of these was south of Cardston. I left about 9:30 this morning in summer driving conditions but ran into fresh snow and dense fog banks  between Magrath and Cardston. A bit of a surprise as the sky was blue, but this must have happened over night. I reduced my speed to about 80 kph and kept on truckin', arriving without difficulty at the cache site about 10:30.

I quickly went to the coordinates for part 1 - there was a broken bird house but there was no sign of the container. The I spotted something sticking out of the snow on the other side of the barbed-wire fence. There was a gate not too far away and I was soon back to the coordinates. The object was indeed the container for part 1. It gave the directions for finding part 2. I returned the container to its proper location and then went over to part 2. The container was under the fresh snow but easy to spot as a small rock pile.

Another February day with a find. Only 13 more days for this month. This was find #10 for 2012. I am getting them one day at a time.

February 1, 11:00 am Geocaching

I looked for this last October without success. February 1 is another day without a find so I thought I would give this another try. Although it is in Magrath, it is the closest cache to home that I have not found.

 I have already found caches on 14 different days for February. This adds 1 to the total. Since this is a leap year, I still have 14 other days in February to go seeking a cache. This includes the next 4 days. I will give this some thought.
