    • ch 2: a cook and servant
    • ch 2: pleasant, tells Johnnie stories
  • Bissett
    • ch 2: a nurse and servant, grey hair
    • ch 2: very strict with Johnnie, but he runs to her for help when he is scared instead of his mother
  • EQUITY
    • ch 1: bushy black eyebrows, about 65
    • ch 1: has a client who wants a document that he believes Law's client possesses. This document could seriously damage Equity's client
  • Fortisquince, Martin
    • ch 1: Law does not know or meet with his client. Martin Fortisquince acts as a go-between
    • ch 1: he is a highly respected retired lawyer
  • Greenslade, Job
    • ch 2: young workman in the house, a cousin to one of the maids that he is going out with
  • LAW
    • ch 1: a disreputable lawyer, who takes a bribe from Equity
    • ch 1: small, large head, about 40
  • Mellamphy, Johnnie
    • ch 2: the main protagonist of the story. Much of the early part of the novel is about his memories as a boy. 
  • Mellamphy, Johnnie's mom
    • ch 2: kind, pretty, blond hair
    • ch 2: always carries a small cylindrical silver box attached to a chain around her waist
  • Mr Pimlott
    • ch 2: a gardner for the property long before Johnnie and his mom arrived. He lives in a nearby cottage.
    • ch 2: he is setting a trap to catch a mole. He takes very good care of his tools.
  • stranger
    • ch 2: talking with Johnnie's mother at the gate
    • ch 2: large head (could he be LAW?), curly reddish hair, large beak-like nose, large blue eyes
    • ch 2: speaks with an accent, not well educated (not likely LAW), malevolent look
    • ch 2: Johnnies mother thinks he was from London (by the way he spoke?)
