A. Morning Musings

We move our clocks back one hour this morning as we return to standard time.

Geocaching has become a major time sink. The good news is that I am seeing parts of southern Alberta that I have never seen before. But I also notice that the quest for a cache gets in the way of spending time to pursue something else of interest. Yesterday there was a "real" prairie sentinel (aka old wooden grain elevator) near Raymond but we ignored it in our pursuit of caches. Not good. The caches are not my goal, they are the catalyst that gets me into areas where I should pursue my own interests.

The last geocache of our trip yesterday was "last" in many senses. It ( GC1AJCK - The Aerie Cache ) referred to an abandoned eagle nest in a large cottonwood tree along side a country road. The online geocaching web site indicated that there were 2 Travel Bugs in the cache. But as we approached the area we were horrified to see that the tree had been cut down. But they had saved the cache and placed it under a pile of branches. Although the cache still contained many of the trinkets and the log (which I dutifully signed), it did not have the two Travel Bugs. I did send an email to the creator (of the cache) informing him of the situation.

Now for today. I am determined to place the geocoin that I picked up a couple of days ago into a Travel Bug hotel. I know there is one in Cowley which I have yet to see. Once I am there I will see whether I will visit a few other caches in that area. However I want to see if I can find the last "little green thing in a tree" in west Lethbridge. That will be my first goal.

There are a few caches in the Cowley area that are all near the area flooded by the dam on the Oldman River. This is an area where I used to go fishing with John Percevault when I first arrived in Lethbridge over 20 years ago. Now to set up the planning sheet.

B. Actual Learning Activities

7:30 am

I have set up a planning sheet for a trip to Cowley and Lundbrek Falls (where there is an Earthcache). This has taken almost 2 hours but it is almost as much fun as the actual trip. I have read about 4 sites near Cowley and have done some background reading about the TBs I expect to find on this trip.

9:50 am

I have been looking at a spruce tree ( GC1AAPB - Pineing For You ) for the last hour but have yet to see the bison tube. Once in a while a DNF is good for one. At least I hope so. Now to hit the road for a few hours and enjoy the foothills of Alberta.

4:00 PM

We are back from our geocaching trip to Cowley. I had a Planning Sheet for 5 caches and we were successful on all five. We then stopped at Pincher Creek for a late lunch before heading back to Lethbridge. Here are the logs for the 5 caches:
