A. Morning Musings

Canada Day.

Today will be more of a holiday. Our goal will be to see some of the sites, and hopefully a few birds, in the Missoula area. Then we will continue on to Great Falls where we will spend the night. There is a 60% chance of thunderstorms this afternoon for the entire area.

The little coffee makers in the hotel rooms are very welcome in the early morning.

I have three books in front of me:

The latter book is the most appealing at this hour.

Literature Begin reading "State of Fear"

B. Actual Learning Activities

7:00 am

Kundtz begins "Moments in Between" by noting that "The metaphors we use not only reflect the way we live, but create the way we live." [p. 10]

The metaphors he suggests fail to work for me. Here are a few I do like:

Enough. This has been a grand way to spend a few minutes.

It also reminds me to focus more on my eating and exercise activities. I need to eat less, eat a little more nutritiously, and engage in more physical activities. An early morning walk does double duty - it is also the best time to look for birds.

This web site, with its opportunity for morning musings, is a good idea. But I need to focus a little more on the musings.

What am I trying to learn at the moment? GPS and geocaching, birding, and Digital Command Control for model trains.

8:20 PM

Another good day. We decided to drive directly to Great Falls, and arrived about 11 am. We stopped off at Barnes and Noble where I bought about a dozen books. We thought we would have lunch at one of our favorite restaurants but it turned out to be closed and out of business. We then drove next door to check-in at our motel but they wouldn't give us a room until after 3 PM. This trip is one surprise after another. We then drove along 10th Ave and pulled in at 4B's, which we remembered from past years as having superb tomato soup (honest!). It was still superb. Then we did a little more shopping for clothing and handicraft materials.

We checked into the motel and were ready to do a little birding but a quick check of the weather indicated severe thunderstorms so we settled in, opened a bottle of Black Swan shiraz, and relaxed. With the stormy weather we opted for dinner in the restaurant in the motel. This turned out to be a good choice: the food was delicious.

Here is a list of the books I bought today:

The first book was a field guide for birds in Montana. The next 9 books were all part of a series of Barnes & Nobles Classics. They were all about $7. These are all books that I am familiar with, but which I have never read. Now to knuckle down and rectify this. The last two books were modern books, one on fitness, the other on psychology.

However I am going to give Michael Crichton one more chance and will see if I can get interested in his latest thriller, "State of Fear".
