A. Morning Musings

Today will primarily be a driving day as we plan to make it at least as far as Coeur D Alene, Idaho. There is one state park that we may stop at in order to do a little birding but that will depend on how we are feeling, the weather, and the time of day. There is an outside chance that we will continue on to Missoula, Montana.

Today's weather is still fine, but the next few days after this will be overcast with some rain likely. We will see how this unfolds.

B. Actual Learning Activities

8:35 PM

Another Learning day. The first three hours of our drive east from Chelan to Spokane was all through wheat country. I had no idea that wheat was grown in Washington, let alone so much.

We decided to stay on the highways and aim for Missoula in Montana. The part of the trip across Idaho took about an hour. From Spokane east we were in very hilly, mountainous terrain with lodgepole pine trees everywhere.

We are now in Missoula, arriving about 4 PM. We had dinner and then headed to Southgate Mall where I bought 3 books.

• The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. (2008) by David Wroblewski.
  • This has been receiving a lot of publicity (including selected as an Oprah Pick). The store was selling it for 40% off. How could I resist?
• Sometimes Only Horses to Eat. (2008) by Carl W. Haywood.
  • This is a biography of the years David Thompson spent in Montana (1807 - 1812). I enjoy reading anything about David Thompson so this was an automatic reflex.
• Born Digital. (2008) by John Palfrey & Urs Gasser.
  • This is one of the first books to appear that describes the first generation of digital natives. I expect this to be fun and occasionally thought provoking.

We are making good use of technology. We have just used the Web to determine that the resorts near the Road to the Sun in Glacier National Park are all closed. And we have used my GPS unit to find restaurants and bookstores in Missoula.
