A. Morning Musings

I am definitely beginning the day with a look at the weather forecast. Today is fine, and so is tomorrow. But then the temperature will drop at least 20 degrees with no obvious let up in the cold.

We have a short trip planned for today - Vulcan, to take care of a few genealogical matters with the local historian. I will take the GPS unit with us, as I want to become familiar with using it now that I have a satisfactory mount for it on the dash board. I may even try for one geocache. I recall noting that there is one in a small park in the center of Champion. I will download the site to my nuvi and then see if we have time to give it a try.

A review of the geocache site in Champion indicated that the last 4 cachers all failed to find it. That may be interpreted as it is a good hide, or it may mean that it has been muggled. I will give it a quick search and see if I can use the title of the cache as a clue. But I will focus on another one that is on a rural road nearby. This will be my first attempt at a "school cache".

The combination of Kull's book, together with recent news from Australia, suggests that this morning may be a good time to sit back and read the remaining 3 weeks of daily reading from "A Year With Rumi".

A Year With Rumi: Daily Readings

Coleman Barks

I have enjoyed the daily Rumi readings - not always one a day, but definitely some every few days. They have a wisdom between the lines that is both calming and enlightening. I will continue to sample his writings in the future. This is not a book to read and file, it is more like a sparkling brook that one goes to when thirsty.

I would rate this book as 5 out of 5.

We are back from a geocaching trip looking for two geocaches near the village of Champion. Here are the reports for the search:

Solitude: Seeking Wisdom in Extremes

Robert Kull

This is a very unique book. It describes the events of a year living alone in the wilds of southern Chile. The goal was a voyage of self-discovery about the author. What sets the book apart is its efforts at providing an accurate description of what occurred and what the author did in his various meditation and self-questioning activities.

It is not a book for everyone as there are no epiphanies or special events, and there is a fair amount of "academic" analysis of what he is noticing and thinkng. But I found the book fascinating, primarily for its apparent honesty - a personal honesty that is all too rare in academe.

I would rate this book as 4 out of 5.
