A. Morning Musings

I am going to begin the morning by some pleasant reading as I finish "Through Black Spruce". Then I will see about approaching Ship It! in a more systematic manner. One idea is to have a look at the web site in the Yahoo group and see if I can notice anything similar to my situation. Another idea is to pull back a little and read the manual.

Through Black Spruce

Joseph Boyden

I have read three books recently that weave an interlocking pattern. Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay, A Fair Country by John Ralston Saul, and Through Black Spruce by Joseph Boyden. Canada is very fortunate to have three such writers.

Boyden's novel is spectacular - he provides a superb view of native life in both the north (Moosonee) as well as in the south (Montreal and New York).

I would rate this book as 5 out of 5.

Having completed "Through Black Spruce", and having reviewed my list of books (both fiction and non-fiction) I want to select one of each for my daily reading activity. For non-fiction I want to try "Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain" by Maryanne Wolf. For fiction "The Flying Troutmans" by Miriam Toews.

6:30 PM

I have begun reading "The Flying Troutmans". It is pure fun, much like her previous novels.

I have spent 2 hours working my through a new effort at setting up Ship It!, with no success.

Now to begin reading "Proust and the Squid".

9:00 PM

I have spent another 2 hours with Ship It! and have made substantial progress. I now have a set of parameters for the Trains and their Schedules that results in a repetitive cycle of moves of hopper cars between two industries. This is an important step forward.
