A. Morning Musings

My cup is beside me. Now for a few thoughts before the day begins.

Geocaching and Model Trains are my two top priorities. Literature is third. I am going to drop Mathematics: Symmetry from my list of immediate activities. I simply run out of hours.

A few quick observations. Keeping track of each geocache search using a combination of web page and pdf file is working well. The web page, which is first used as a planning sheet for a search, is good. It captures all of the necessary information in about a half page, giving room to make a few notes at the time of the actual search. The filling in of information on my return, including photos, and saving it as a pdf file is also working well. What is missing is some form of index. Two obvious candidates are Excel and Filemaker Pro. I think Filemaker Pro will do a better job, as sometimes I will want to sort all of my records by date, or perhaps by location, and sometimes by cache ID (so I can see all of my attempts for a particular cache). I will set this up today.

I checked the Calgary GPS Central store yesterday and the friction mount for my nuvi unit was on order. I just checked now, and one page says it is in stock, but another says it is on order. I will wait until 8 am and give them a phone call to see if I can order it.

I have three local geocaches that I am ready to pursue. One is the very first cache that I tried to find (GC16ZFP) NS West #2. I am sure that I have the location down to the metal beam at either end of a small wooden bridge. The other two will be first attempts (GC1AWFD, GC1AWFG). It is time to spend some time outdoors.

It is almost a month since we took a trip along some of the backroads of southern Alberta. It is time to do this again. I want to try setting this up using my GPS unit and waypoints.

Model Trains: I want to be sure to spend at least one, and preferably two, hours a day on assembling the 4 cylindrical hopper cars.

I am not monitoring the model train forums on the web. I will try to spend an hour on that activity today.

But first, a little calculus.

B. Actual Learning Activities

8:00 am

I have carefully gone through the material in sections 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 in Banner's "The Calculus Lifesaver". This has reviewed the ideas of inverse functions, composition of functions, and odd & even functions. No real difficulties. I took Weiner's suggestion of trying to work through each example myself before reading the example. I like it.

8:30 PM

I made one more try for geocache GC16ZFP but it is still a DNF.

I have brought my geocache web pages up to date. I have had a total of 47 "searches", with 29 "finds". The very first geocache search (GC16ZFP) "NS West #2" is giving me the most trouble. I have conducted 5 separate searches and have still to find the cache.
