Today will be a geocaching day. I will be joining two experienced geocachers on a full day trip to the area we passed through a couple of days ago. I am looking forward to the day and to seeing how this activity is "really" done.
I still have about 3 early morning hours to utilize. Yesterday I put time into Model Trains and Mathematics, but was not able to engage in further slow reading of "Midnight's Children".
But first I want to have one more try at downloading geocache information from the web to my Garmin nuvi 850.
Learning Category | Planned Activities for Today | Time |
---|---|---|
Technology | Problem downloading geocache information to Garmin | 3 hr |
Geocaching | Trip to area near Coutts | 7 hr |
Model Trains | Continue building Proto 2000 Series 52' 6" Drop End Mill Gondola | 1 hr |
Mathematics | Continue reading "The Calculus Lifesaver" | 1 hr |
Literature | Continue slow reading "Midnight's Children" by Salman Rushdie | 1 hr |
Problem downloading geocache information to Garmin nuvi 850: I plug the unit into the USB port on my Mac. Within a few seconds I see a screen on my Mac indicating that it is beginning a virus scan of the new peripheral. This tells me that the Mac is able to sense that it is connected to the nuvi. Good.
The next step is to use my Firefox browser to access the MyGarmin web site. This also works. I "sign in" and am ready to access the information. I type in "Coutts, Alberta" and quickly see a map of that area of southern Alberta. I click on the "Find Geocaches" button and obtain a list of 15 geocaches together with a display showing their location on the map on my Mac screen. Good. I click on one of the geocaches (GC1F0HX - Recognition) and then click on the Download Selected Caches button. The icon twirls indicating that it is downloading the information for that cache to my unit. Good.
I then drag the Garmin icon to the Eject option, the icon disappears, and I disconnect the Garmin from the Mac. Good. The Garmin then displays a message saying it is Loading Maps. Good. This is the first step in a normal start up. I click on Where To? and then on Near ... and then on My Destination. Then I select Favorites and press the All Favorites. I receive a long list of geocaches with distances indicating they are about 100 km away. Good. But when I click on one of the geocache IDs I see that they are near my home. I may not be understanding the Near feature. Continuing ... Pressing the View Map option displays the area near our home and there are a number of geocaches on the display. Good. But when I adjust the display to show the area near Coutts there is no geocache symbol. Also when I display All Favourites and scroll through the list, I do not see GC1F0HX.
I have spent about an hour clicking on various features on the Garmin, but I cannot find any indication that GC1F0HX is in the unit. However, as an aside, I have learned how to delete a favorite from my data file on the unit.
I have spent a couple of additional hours trying to figure out why my Garmin unit is no longer able to download geocache information from the Web. No success. I have the phone number of the Garmin technical assistance staff and will try contacting them tomorrow morning.
But the main event today was a geocaching trip with two experienced searchers to Coutts and the Milk River area of southern Alberta. We found all seven of the caches that we were after.

You can always tell a serious geocacher by the hat they wear. I now fit right in - the next step is learning how to find these things.
The overall trip was fantastic. I learned a lot about what to look for as well as the importance of careful planning. I also learned the location of a very nice provincial campground. I am still struggling to find my own way of keeping a log of my trips as well as what kind of information to bring with me on a trip. Having a photographer who is capable of taking unobrusive action shots is a real plus! Thank you Team DJM.
