A. Morning Musings

This will primarily be a travel day as we head south. There will be a stop in Penticton and then we continue south, cross the border into Washington state, and head for the small town of Chelan. I have wanted to see this area since I was a little boy and listened to stories of my aunt who lived there. It sounds like a little Jasper - relatively remote and mountainous, but with lots of apples. Now to see what it is really like.

The coffee maker in this motel is different than most that I have seen. It makes a full pot of 10 cups rather than the more reasonable 4 cup systems that I usually see. Needless to say, we don't finish the pot.

I have just checked the weather for Chelan: sunny with a high of +82 F. I have bookmarked a conversion web site. That works out to +28 C. I will also have to deal with miles and gallons.

B. Actual Learning Activities

8:30 PM

Another great day. The sky was a bright blue without even a wisp of a cloud. We left Kelowna at 8 this morning and were in Penticton shortly after 9. We were held up for about 30 minutes near Summerland due to road construction. They are widening the highway and this means cutting a slice off the side of a mountain. Incredible.

After checking out a used bookstore (huge!) where we were both looking for particular books, but coming up empty. Then on to Osoyoos where we had a Tim Horton's BELT on a multigrain bagel. That counted as lunch. A few minutes later we were in the United States.

The drive to Chelan was very different than what I had envisaged. It was basically very dry and rocky, but wherever possible there were orchards. We checked in by 1 PM at a beautiful Best Western motel and then quickly decided to hit the road and see the Grand Coulee Dam. While stopping at Chief Joseph Dam on the way we noticed about 4 large raptors soaring on the thermals. I was able to obtain a couple of poor photos but they were adequate to identify them as Ferruginous Hawks. The Grand Coulee Dam was another surprise for me - I think I may have it mixed up with the Hoover Dam. However the lesson in geology was worth it. We stopped off at Dry Falls on the way back - very impressive. Once we were back in Chelan we had a great dinner at an old bar/restaurant where I had one of the best seafood fettucini meals that I can remember. We then bought a few groceries and a couple of bottles of wine at a Safeway store. The wine was only about $7/bottle - about half what I would pay for in Alberta (or in Ballina!!).

The aplets and cotlets are a confectionery that I remember my aunt (who lived in Chelan at the time) bringing for us when she visited us in the 1950's. We hope to visit the place where they are made tomorrow.
