B. Actual Learning Activities

12:00 PM

Chores completed.

The iPad is now operational on a 3G network. But I was not able to buy a case or protective shield for it. The local stores are all back-ordered with iPad 2 accessories. Not a worry. I'll try again in a week or so.

The model train throttle and base unit has been mailed to MRC.

While driving on scenic drive I noticed 3 Bald Eagles circling above the coulee. This is my first sighting of this bird in 2011, and only the third time that I have made a note of such sightings - the last time was in 2007.

Although the temperature is +8 C, there is a strong westerly wind and it is bitterly cold. The wind chill temperature is +2 C, but it feels like -10.

3:00 PM

In spite of the wind I decided to do my coulee walk. I took binoculars with me, but I am beginning to realize that there are few birds about on windy days. Makes sense to me. I did see a couple of crows, a couple of magpies, 4 robins, and a sparrow.

The sparrow turned out to be interesting. It was on the ground at the edge of a dense bunch of shrubs. I was able to get a good look at it for about 20 seconds before it flew back into the denser growth. What was most noticeable was the complete lack of markings. The back and side of the head was a uniform brown. The bill was grey and triangular: wide at the base but sharply pointed at the tip. There was a suggestion of some streaking along the flanks but I didn't have a front view at any time. The description of its habitat and feeding pattern matched the area where I saw it. I cross-referenced about 5 field guides and the Fox Sparrow was easily the best match to what I saw. Bonus points: this turned out to be a "lifer".
