B. Actual Learning Activities

2:30 PM

I had a good workout today.

I drove to the end of a road but the hiking track was pure ice and impossible to ski so I then walked about 4 km along a series of snowmobile tracks to an area that had a geocache hidden. The walking was relatively straight forward. Unfortunately when I got within 30 metres of the cache site my GPS unit indicated that I should leave the trail and move into the woods. I took three steps and sank into fresh snow up to my hips. After pulling myself back onto the packed snow I double-checked my coordinates and couldn't find an alternative route. I tried once more in a route that looked to have a little less snow but once again I was in deep in one step so had to give up the idea of looking for the cache in the deep snow.

On the other hand I got a good cardio workout, and I became familiar with the general layout for a second attempt later this summer.

I saw one Mountain Chickadee, 2 Clarke's Nutcrackers, and one Spruce Grouse. Not very many birds for a substantial section of nature. I saw tracks for one coyote, one moose and one rabbit. Once again, surprisingly little evidence of life in the wild. Perhaps the noise from all the skidoos and ATV's keeps them away from the vicinity of the trails.

Here are a few photos:

I think the cache is about there somewhere

Truly, it was a great day. Sunny, temperature just above zero, and silence was deafening. It felt good to be out again.

Since I was not able to get near the cache area due to the deep snow I will not log this activity as a DNF but will simply consider it a learning experience for another try later in the year.
