A. Morning Musings

Today is Christmas Eve.

We gained 1 minute in our hours of daylight. Hallelujah!

The temperature is 12 degrees warmer than yesterday morning, but the wind is blowing and the snow has drifted. Not a good day for travel.

I have my coffee beside me, can hear the wind howling outside, and am comfortable and warm.

Stat-Spotting: A Field Guide to Identifying Dubious Data

Joel Best

I read this book yesterday, in about an hour. I was quite familiar with almost all of the points he made, but still enjoyed the book. It is an excellent book for the general public as many of the ideas are common sense rather than technical.

The table of contents gives a superb sense of the book. I will redo this using mindmap to give a sense of the power of the diagrams

Here is the diagram after I have created the first level of headings:

stat

Each heading that is followed by a small + symbol can be expanded or collapsed by simply clicking on it.

stat

And again ...

stat

This software can also be used as a dynamic learning tool. One can look at the collapsed headings and see if one can remember what is stored within them. Then one can click on the small + symbol to open up that heading to the next level.

Here is the website for this software: http://www.mindjet.com/community/default.aspx

It would be nice if the popular media also read this book. So often they present a few statistics but fail to give any sense of the context for such numbers. Is a million, or a billion, dollars a lot when discussing a country's budget? How does this compare to previous years, or other countries? And provide a chart rather than a sound bite.

There was a beautiful sunrise in the east this morning. Unfortunately the view from our front window is primarily just the houses and trees across the road and does not make a very good photo. We were spoiled when we had that unit at Lennox Head and I could take a photo every morning as the sun came over the ocean. An early morning walk along the beach is another feature that we miss.

I will wait a bit and see if the wind dies down before shovelling out the drifts in the driveway. At the moment there is little point as it will just fill in again.
