A. Morning Musings

The storm has been both slower to develop and not as bad as first forecast. The temperature is supposed to continue to fall throughout the day. There are a few inches of snow and much drifting, but the snow was very dry and small so there is not a lot of accumulation. With the wind still up there is not much point in doing much shovelling. A good day for a coffee (at home rather than Tim Hortons).

I now have three books on the go. "The Falls" is a superbly written story. I can see why Oates is recognized as a very good author. "Born Digital" is very good at what it tries to do, but it is rather dry and presents the information on the young generation that has always had access to technology through the eyes of an older generation. Important, with a strong legal flavour, but lacking the vibrancy of the reality. "The Middle Way" has a good opening chapter on world history, but it then begins to champion the author's conviction that moderation in all things will be necessary if we are to survive. The point may be valid but it comes across as though the author is the first person to say this.

And there are my model trains.

B. Actual Learning Activities

11:30 am

The sidewalks and driveway are shovelled clear. This was more than I was expecting as the snow had drifted into hard pacs, but it was still fun. The temperature is -22 C but the wind chill temperature is -34 C. One finger seems to be having some difficulty thawing out, but it should come okay with time.

2:00 PM

I have created a Ship It! switching list that will use my GP7 (pronounced "Geep 7") to power the local freight from Coaldale to Jasper and back. It will be the first time that I have incorporated a tank car from Distillery Row and it will be the first time that I will use an S-4 switcher to form the initial consist in the Coaldale Yard. Now for a little reading.
