A. Morning Musings

I have set up the web page for today. There are only 2 items listed as "Planned Activities" - reading "Solitude" and performing maintenance on my Model Train rolling stock.

I just remembered that Tuesdays is the Southern Alberta Model Railway Club meeting.

Now for a cup of coffee. Mmmm.

I should add a non-fiction book to my list of readings. I have picked "Born Digital: Understanding the First Generation of Digital Natives". This should be a good sequel to "Proust and the Squid" as Wolf indicated a genuine concern for the impact that the Internet and computer technology may have on our ability to read and think.

I always have a pile of unread books nearby. Most of them eventually get read, but the real value is simply having them where they are easily accessible. If I want to read something, I usually have something appropriate that I can put my eyes on within a few minutes. A good personal library of unread books is important. My tendency to buy a book that looks interesting, even though I may not have time to read it at the time, is a good one. Although I do occasionally get carried away.

A second cup. It tastes as good as the first. I love this time of day. Kull would not call this solitude, and he would be right, but it is peaceful. Time for a little Dylan: "Highlands" from the "Time Out of Mind" CD. ... Kayaks on the coast of BC, camping in the Yukon, hiking in the mountains, geocaching. ... At least my use of technology is quiet. ... Fascinating how the mind works.

B. Actual Learning Activities

3:00 PM

The sky is overcast and grey, the wind is howling, the land is grey and dirty. The temperature is just above freezing. Positively perfect weather for reading "Solitude". My description of the day is the same as Kull's. Except (almost) every day in his setting is like that, whereas here I feel hard done by when we have a couple of consecutive days like this.
