Today looks like a relatively dreary day. A good day for continuing to work on my model train layout. I will try to install one of my Digitrax DS64 stationary decoder modules to the Jasper District. If everything goes according to plan I will have four turnouts on my mainline that I can control with the handheld Cab. I also will cut a small section off the Jasper District table to give me a little more room in the aisle between Jasper and Lone Pine.
I have just read all of the logs for "Hillside". Most people comment on the container, saying how neat it is. This certainly has piqued my interest. I am sure I was very close to it yesterday. This is a good excuse for another walk in the coulees. I am getting my exercise.
I think I will go geocaching this morning. I am glad this is not addictive. I will try for one new one (GC1AX8R) "Where the Buffalo Roam".
Learning Category | Planned Activities for Today | Time |
---|---|---|
Literature | Complete reading "The Black Grizzly of Whiskey Creek" by Sid Marty | 2 hr |
Model Trains | Install one Digitrax DS64 stationary module on layout | 1 hr |
Geocaching | Look for GC1AX8R, GC1AX8H & GC1AJBC | 3 hr |
We were geocaching from 10 am until 1 PM. We set out with a list of 3 geocaches, all on the west side of the coulee. Two of these were caches that I had failed to find on an earlier trip. Today, with a fair amount of perseverance, we located all three caches. Fantastic! This is also the first time that I have found 3 in one day. I now have a total of 10.
Here is an update of the table I created yesterday:

This was a good morning, for many reasons.
First, it got us both outside for a full 3 hours, something we have been letting slip this summer.
Second, we found all three geocaches on my list, two of which were my second attempt.
Third, we saw one deer, one hawk (Swainson's), a Western Tanager (a new lifer for us) and a Snow Bunting (a second new lifer for us!).
Fourth, for the first time, we left something in two of the caches. We left an Aboriginal Art key chain in the Buffalo Roam cache, and an Ayer's Rock key chain in the Hillside cache. Both seemed particularly appropriate for the cache it was put in. We took a firecracker and a broken pencil from the Hillside cache (simply because we couldn't fit everything back into it). I will sharpen the pencil and replace it shortly, assuming I can find the location again.

This was a great trip!
Officially this book is classified as non-fiction. But it reads like a novel. Even though one knows how it will end, the suspense builds like a murder mystery with danger on every page. I have always liked Marty's books (I have them all), as well as a wonderful CD of his singing. This book is different than his others, in part because he devotes sections of the tale to describing how he thinks the bear might be thinking as it handles the intrusions of people into its domain.
This is a thoughtful book, one that makes one think about the role of national parks and of the relationship between people and wild animals in nature.
I would rate this story as 5 out of 5.
