Birding | Look for birds while visiting the Whitsundays | 2 hr |
A fantastic day. We walked downtown at about 7:30 this morning to see about taking a cruise boat to the nearby Whitsunday Islands. The shops were still closed but we talked to a bus driver who suggested that we take a taxi to nearby Shute Harbour. Done. We quickly learned about the various options for day trips and signed up for a 3-island Explorer cruise which left in a few minutes.
Our first stop was Long Island where we took a 1.5 hour hike through a rainforest. This gave us a good sense of what that type of terrain was like.
Then the boat took us to Daydream Island which was basically a tourist resort. We saw some tropical fish in a pond at the resort. We toured the shops and had a good lunch at the Bakery.
The boat then took us to Hamilton Island which was more like a small town. We had a very pleasant drink at a resort bar overlooking the water. We returned to Shute Harbour about 5:30 PM. A great start to the trip.
