The Hayes Lab
Group Facilities
The Hayes lab is housed in the new (2019) $300,000,000 Science Commons and is exceptionally well-equipped for synthetic chemistry. Equipment includes:
- 9 - 8' combination (both horizontal and vertical) sash fume hoods; each graduate student is assigned their own 8' fume hood.
- Every graduate student has their own double manifold vacuum line in their fume hood. Each of these lines is plumbed with 4 different gases (argon + 3 interchangable gases (e.g. CO, N2, H2, H2C=CH2, CH4)).
- All fume hoods are also equipped with a pump cabinet, which substantially decreases ambient noise and leaves more working space within the hood.
- Much of our sensitive chemistry is conducted within our 2 double station glove boxes:
- The first glove box (Johann Sebastian Box) is equipped with two –35 °C freezers, a cold well and both small and large antechambers.
- The second glove box (Donald Glover) is equipped with one –35 °C freezer, a digital O2 sensor and a CCD camera for crystal manipulation. Both glove boxes are plumbed into an external vacuum system so that solvent can be removed from small scale reactions.
- All fume hoods, glove boxes and other instruments are supplied from centrally located gases equipped with quick-fit connectors, making it easier and safer to monitor gas levels and replace cylinders. All equipment is connected to a state-of-the-art ventilation system to avoid contamination of laboratory air.
