story |
The Company drift downstream for about 5 days without seeing much
sign of life.
Sam tells Frodo that he thought he saw something in the water,
and that it reminded him of Bilbo's stories about Gollum. Frodo
is sure he saw him during the night, and Aragon also says he noticed
him.
On the eighth day they are attacked by Orcs. Legolis kills a black
creature as it flies overhead.
They portage around some rapids. Aragon indicates that he wants
to go as far as Amon Hen before deciding whether to go west to Minas
Tirith or east to Mordor.

comment |
There are hints of trouble. "Boromir sat muttering to himself,
sometimes biting his nails, as if some restlessness or doubt consumed
him..." and Frodo thinks he sees something in the water.
The last two sentences of the chapter: "They could go no further
without choice between the east-way and the west. The last stage
of the Quest was before them."
