story |
The time has come to decide whether to go west or east, but Frodo
asks for an hour alone in order to help him decide on a course of
action.
Frodo climbs a hill, and then discovers that Boromir has followed
him. Boromir tries to convince Frodo that he should give the Ring
to Boromir. Frodo escapes by putting the Ring on and becoming invisible.
Frodo runs away and soon finds himself on top of the hill Amon
Hen. He then becomes aware of the Eye searching for him. Just in
time he realizes that he must take the Ring off in order to avoid
being seen by Sauron.
Frodo decides to go on alone in order to avoid bringing harm to
his friends.
Sam guesses where Frodo has gone, and goes after him. Thus the
two of them decide to continue on together into Mordor.

comment |
This is a classic Saturday matinee ending. The Company is in disarray.
Frodo and Sam are going ahead alone. Boromir has acted as a traitor.
The rest of the party is scattered while looking for Frodo. What
hope is there now?

quotations |
" 'The day has come at last,' he said: 'the day of choice
which we have long delayed. What shall now become of our Company
that has travelled so fari in fellowship? Shall we turn west with
Boromir and go to the wars of Gondor; or turn east to the Fear and
Shadow; or shall we break our fellowship and go this way and that
as each may choose? Whatever we do must be done soon. We cannot
long halt here. The enemy is on the eastern shore, we know; but
I fear that the Orcs may already be on this side of the water.'
" [Aragon] [p. 387]
