story

Elrond picks the Company of the Ring: Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, Legolas the elf, Gimli the dwarf, Strider (Aragon) and Boromir. Gandalf supports adding Pippin and Merry.

Aragon is given the Sword of Elindil, which has been forged anew by Elvish smiths.

Bilbo gives Frodo his small sword, called Sting. He also gives him a dwarf-mail coat to wear under his clothes.

The Company of the Ring leave Elrond's house and Rivendell.

After a fortnight they approach the Misty Mountains to the south. They attempt to go over a pass called the Redhorn gate, but a blizzard on the slopes of Caradhras forces them to turn back.

comment The journey begins.

quotations

" I think that we may hope now that the Ringwaiths were scattered, and have been obliged to return as best they could to their Master in Mordor, empty and shapeless. If that is so, it will be some time before they can begin the hunt again." [Gandalf] [p. 268]

"The Company of the Ring shall be Nine; and the Nine Walkers shall be set against the Nine Riders that are evil. [Elrond] [p. 268]

"I think, Elrond, that in this matter it would be well to trust rather to their friendship than to great wisdom." [Gandalf, supporting the adding of Pippin & Merry] [p. 269]

"The Company took little gear of war, for their hope was in secrecy not in battle." [p. 272]

"The further you go, the less easy it will be to withdraw; yet no oath or bond is laid on you to go further than you will. For you do not yet know the strength of your hearts, and you cannot foresee what each may meet upon the road." [Elrond] [p. 274]

"... but let him not vow to walk in the dark, who has not seen the nightfall." [Elrond] [p. 274]
