I got side-tracked this morning thinking about a different design for this website and forgot to update the existing website.
I did 2 laps of my coulee walk today. I found the second lap a bit strenuous but I am sure it is good for me. I took binoculars with me and am glad I did. I saw 2 birds in some dense shrubbery just as I was leaving the university grounds at the bottom of the coulee. One was obviously a Fox Sparrow and I made a few mental notes of the characteristics of the second. When home I had no difficulty identifying it as an American Tree Sparrow. Another lifer!
I have decided that I need to familiarize myself with Dreamweaver CS5. The goal is to create a new website using templates that will have the feel of a narrative description but will have sections that contain links that will be listed in an index. Thus the basic structure will be a single web page for each day.
But there will also be a series of index pages. The basic index will be a calendar page but there will also be additional index pages for each major theme (Literature, Photography, Geocaching , Trains, etc.) These pages will consist of a chronological table of links with a brief description of the nature of the content.
However the first step is to acquaint myself with Dreamweaver CS5. Templates are described in Lesson 7 of the CIB (Classroom in a Book). I first tried looking at this book in January, but I will begin again.
Now to start with Lesson 1. Customizing Your Workspace.
The workspace is the overall layout of the Dreamweaver working area. This includes a design view of the web page one is creating as well as a variety of panels and toolbars for building the web page.
There are 3 views (design, code & split).
There are a large number of panels which are arranged along the right side of the screen as well as along the top and bottom. The Window menu lists all of these panels. Although the panels can be custom arranged it makes sense to use of the prebuilt workspace layouts. The Classic workspace layout is similar to earlier versions of Dreamweaver. The Designer workspace layout is optimized for visual designers. I will try this.
There are 5 toolbars. Four of these are usually displayed at the top of the document window. This is controlled from the View window. The Coding toolbar is displayed vertically on the left side when the coding view is selected. The Property Inspector tool is usually displayed below the document window and is the most important of the toolbars. Clicking on various components of the web page (headings, paragraphs, images, tables) as well as the HTML or CSS tabs gives one access to a number of relevant tools.
Summary:
- 3 views (design, code, split)
- many panels
- many toolbars
- pick designer workspace layout
- Property Inspector toolbar at bottom is most important
Lesson 2 is about HTML. I am familiar with this material.
Lesson 3 is about CSS. Although I am familiar with this material, it is worth reviewing. Done. The description of the box model is one of the clearest I have seen. Every HTML element has an imaginary box around it that is formatted according to a series of CSS rules.
I am pleased with my progress today. The first 3 chapters were a good review.
I also found time this afternoon to read the second chapter of "The Wayfinders".
