A. Morning Musings

Wireless access to the internet from the motel room is wonderful.

I received a reply from an email about background information about a CNR freight car and was directed to a web site that is exactly what I was looking for.

The number on the model is CN 473966. It has a "green horizontal leaf" with the text "Serves All Canada". The prototype was built in 2 - 46. I now know that numbers 473000-473999 had an AAR rating of XM which means "Box Car. General service, suitable for lading which should be kept from the weather. A box car is a closed car having side and end housings and roof, with doors in sides or sides and ends.". The inside length of the car was 40.6 feet and the inside height was 10 feet. The door width was 6 feet. and the car contained 3712 cu ft. The cars in this series were built by Canadian Car & Foundry in 5-6/37 and were in service between 7/1937 and 1/1989.

Thus it seems that the date on my model of 2 - 46 for the built date is wrong.

I now have information on the Canadian Car & Foundry as well.

In 1909 it turned out 12,000 new cars.

I have also been able to monitor the bidding of a book called "Constructed in Kingston" on eBay. The current bid is $54. and there is still 1 day and 14 hours left.

I have also downloaded the geocaches for the Vernon area into my Garmin. Many of them are associated with the numerous murals on the buildings in the downtown area. We will give a couple of these a try later this morning.

Now to sit back and read a little about the history of "The People's Railway".

B. Actual Learning Activities

8:15 PM

The morning was spent looking at the murals in Vernon. I hadn't made a note of the exact coordinates for any of the caches, so we were not able to pinpoint the first one and quickly realized that this was not going to work. We put the GPS unit away and focused on the pictures. We had a nice latte/cappucino before heading south to Kelowna where we had one of our favorites: halibut and chips at the Pheasant & Quail pub.

We checked out the venue for the genealogical conference at Okanagon College and then walked around the area near our motel.

Not a lot to report, but we are here and ready for the next 2 days: one at the conference and one touring the Kettle Valley Railroad site.

I bought a couple of bottles of wine and noticed another first: the first time I had seen a plastic bottle of wine. Here is a photo of two bottles - the smaller bottle is the plastic one but they both hold 750 ml. The price for the plastic bottle was almost $2. less than for the same wine in a glass bottle.
