A. Morning Musings

The first coffee of the morning always tastes good.

I have a few errands to take care of this morning, but most of the day should be free for either reading or trying another geocache trip.

B. Actual Learning Activities

2:00 PM

The not-so-great-but-improving geocache hunter returns from the wilds. This time I was looking for geocache "SOCCOR ANYONE?" (GC1C5F2). The coordinates were given on the geocache website as N 49 40.872 and W112 52.403. I wrote these in my newly created geocache log book (Pen & paper) and then used my Garmin GPS unit to tell me where I was. I left the house, walking, at 12:57 PM and found the cache at 1:45 PM. The cache was rated as a difficulty of 2 and a terrain of 2. The only item in the cache was a small logbook (aka sheet of paper) where one wrote the date and name of the finder. I didn't realize that I would be bushwalking through some deep grass with lots of weeds and nettles, and since I was wearing shorts, my legs took a bit of a beating. All part of the learning curve of a novice geocacher. This brings the number of found geocaches up to 2. I have doubled my score on only my third outing. :-)

The Old Man and the Sea

Ernest Hemingway

I remember reading this when I was an undergraduate student. I also remember the movie with Spencer Tracy. Reading this story again, it has lost none of its power. This is a truly amazing story. Very simple, too simple for a story. Yet Hemingway gets it right. Perfectly.

I would rate this story as 5 out of 5.
