A. Morning Musings

Today looks like it will be a sunny Sunday. Now to put the coffee on and give a few minutes thought to the day.

I need to clear the water lines in the 5th wheel of anti-freeze and check that the water lines are all in working order. I still have a little cleaning to do on the outside but overall the unit is looking pretty good.

The front yard lawn needs mowing but I will wait until noon as I don't want to wake up anyone who might be sleeping in.

B. Actual Learning Activities

9:00 am

I have begun the day by getting back to a little morning reading. I am finally getting into "Babbit", a satire on small business men in the US in the 1920's.

Babbitt

Sinclair Lewis

This novel is considered an American Classic. The version I read was published by Barnes & Noble as part of their Classics series. Lewis won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1930, the first American to win this prize.

The novel is a damning indictment of American Life in the 1920's. Babbitt is a real-estate salesman in the American mid-west who is focused on success and making money. He begins to realize that there might be more to life than this but is unable to figure out what it is. The style is unimaginative by today's standards, but that is also its strength as it gives a clear picture of life at that time.

Although the novel is almost a hundred years old, much of what it describes is still true today. Fascinating!

I would rate this story as 4 out of 5.
