A. Morning Musings

I have an early morning (7:30 am) coffee meeting at the Ugly Mug. But first a cup while getting my day organized.

The coffee tastes good, but it isn't helping me identify today's activities. I should be able to put an hour into digitizing my slides. The actual scanning is fairly slow so I am going to be judicious in which slides I select. That in itself will take some time. Also the images, once they are in iPhoto, will need to be dated and keyworded.

The first slides that I digitized yesterday were from a tray that had 1977 on the label. It is sobering to realize how well they have lasted. I doubt that the digitized images will be available in 30 years, if only because the technology itself keeps changing. This is a genuine worry. I think I may keep the slides as backup.

The original idea behind identifying these "long term activities" is to set everything up so I can easily move from one activity to another. I should be able to locate my stash of papers that I have presented over the years and get that set up for scanning. The second part of that activity is to see if I can locate the digital files of what I have scanned so far. I began this about 3 years ago and then let it slide, so this may be a problem. All I can do is try.

I will add a yellow background to the two cells in the following table to help remind me that I want to put an hour onto these two activities today.

I definitely want to continue reading "Late Nights on Air". This begins as a soft book about a group of individuals who find themselves running a radio station in Yellowknife in Canada's arctic but it soon becomes a spectacular description of individual lives. I am loving it!

B. Actual Learning Activities

7:10 am

A quick glance through my files in the basement failed to locate my collection of professional papers and reports.

However I did come across a small booklet on Scottish cooking with a 1982 date on it. This triggered two thoughts. One: to create a timeline of "my life" with only a few sentences for each year. Two: to play around with some foreign recipes. I have just googled "Scotland recipes" and found this web site: http://www.rampantscotland.com/recipes/blrecipe_index.htm . Definitely tempting!

9:00 am

It only took a few minutes when I returned from the Ugly Mug to find both copies of my articles as well as the electronic (i.e. pdf) files for those that I had scanned in 2004. Good. Now to see what remains to be done.

4:20 PM

I now have two of my "long term" projects underway. I have learned the proper settings for using my new Epson 4990 photo scanner with Adobe Acrobat to create searchable pdf files. I was able to do this for a 39 page paper (pdf file) "School Mathematics - Written Work and the Spoken Word: Two Windows on the Mind" that I presented at a PME conference in Sydney Australia in 1984.

9:00 PM

I have completely finished a New York Times crossword puzzle without any outside assistance from google. I think this is the first time I have done this with a mid-level puzzle. The entire process only took a little over an hour, in three bursts of about 20 minutes each.
