A. Morning Musings

It is overcast this morning with a light drizzle.

Going through the house looking for stuff that we no longer need or use is a good activity. One of the spin-offs is to identify a few tasks that are of a long term nature: culling my collection of professional articles, scanning and preparing a DVD containing all of my professional presentations and papers, digitizing our collection of slides, and putting away my remaining stamps. These are all activities that require an hour/day for a few months. In order to not let these slip away, I will try setting up another table to remind me of the need to keep plugging away on them. This approach of one hour/day eventually resulted in me digitizing a box of vinyl long playing records last year.

Before I begin digitizing my slides I need to see if I can get a slide scanner working that we bought a few months ago. It only works in a PC environment but when I first tried to use it on my Mac (in Windows mode) the device failed to work. I need to try it again now that I have OS X 10.5 on my computer. I also want to try installing it on our Dell desktop maching and see what happens.

On the other hand, summer is almost here, and it is time for spending time out-of-doors. Yesterday I did my first coulee walk of the year. It felt good and it brought my weight back into line from the speed bump I hit yesterday. But today looks like a good day to stay indoors.

B. Actual Learning Activities

7:50 PM

Much of the day was spent trying to find a way to scan my slides. I spent about 3 hours trying to see if I could get a slide scanner working that we bought in March, but with no success on either the windows version on the Mac nor on a DELL PC. I finally gave up, and bought a new Epson 4490 photo scanner. Total success. I began with just a few slides from a tray of old slides (1977!).

Here are two photos of a hiking trip into the back of Mt. Robson:

The lake in the foreground is Berg Lake. I am truly impressed with the quality of this image, given it was taken 30 years ago!
