2:30 pm Today is much like yesterday: a split between Linux activities and reading Otherland.

First the Linux. I found a web site for Linux newbies. I posted my problem about monitor resolutions to a discussion group and received a reply within a couple of hours. The suggestion didn't work (at least I couldn't figure out how to do it). I then tried to reinstall Linux and it got hung up in the middle, so I tried again. This time it worked. Now my Linux window is to small for the monitor! Still it works.

I want to keep reminding myself why I am playing with this:

  1. To see if I can get it working (the answer to this is a qualified yes)
  2. To see if I can create files using Wordperfect (this is also a qualified yes)
  3. To evaluate StarOffice
  4. To set up an Apache web server
  5. To install another program
  6. To use a browser for the web
  7. To import some files from other platforms (Windows, Mac).

The Compaq Presario that I am using is very slow. I think I will need a better machine before continuing very far.

The Otherland book is proceeding nicely. I doubt if there is merit in making notes on this, but I will indicate progress each day that I read it.
