A Year of Learning

This page is an index to the monthly entries. Click on the book to the left.

This web site is a personal electronic notebook of one person's activities while monitoring a "year of learning".

There are two dimensions to the activities:

  • what I am learning
  • the creation of this web site.

I am curious about the question of what a person can actually learn in a year. Learning is about understanding something for the first time. It is also about the experiences and activities that one engages in while attempting to learn.

The first step I have taken is to identify a few parameters of the effort. First, it must be realistic. As a first cut at this I have established the idea of "an hour a day". This leaves 23 hours a day to "have a life". Some days will be less (likely zero hours) and others more, but I will try to remain close to the notion of 7 hours a week. The bottom line then becomes one of "what can I learn in 365 hours?". We shall see.

Thus not only does one learn, but one uses the resources of the web to facilitate this process - both as a source of information as well as an environment to keep track of the process.

Perhaps (in my dreams) it may be a preliminary form of role model for other learners, of all ages. Students rarely "see" their teachers engaged in the process of learning. This web site provides one such opportunity.

Your comments are welcome.
