A. Morning Musings

6:00 am My first goal, after making coffee, will be to see if I can figure out how to edit the schema file that describes the nature of the data in my ozbirds data file. I want to add an element that is optional and that may consist of more than one occurrence. This element will contain photos of those birds that I have been able to take. More generally, I want to be confident that I can change any data file as time goes on. My second goal will be to see if I can create a stylesheet that only displays the data for one record (i.e. bird). Once again, the more general goal is to see if I can understand how to set up a system that corresponds to the idea of a new record each day, such as for these journal pages.

B. Plan

Chores: none

Technology: continue learning about XSL

History: continue reading and making notes for "Medieval Lives"

Literature: "A Haunted House" by Virginia Woolfe.

C. Actual

1:10 PM I have finished reading "A Haunted House: The Complete Shorter Fiction" by Virginia Woolf.

8:10 PM Overall, today was not that productive from a Learning perspective. I definitely bogged down with the XSLT and stylesheets when I tried to figure out how to store and display images. I ran into further difficulties when I tried to determine how to present separate web pages for each record. At the moment I still have no clear idea of how to proceed with these tasks. Perhaps the best strategy is to let it rest and spend a few days simply learning more about the features of Stylus Studio.

I have continued reading "Medieval Lives" but this is also turning out to be problematic. The style is very informal and the overall approach is more anecdotal than carefully described. On the other hand this does have the value of giving one a better general idea of the situation (which is what I want).

I have now completed the first three main chapters: Peasant, Minstrel & Outlaw.
