Thursday October 16, 2008 Lethbridge, Alberta

10:30 am

I have begun assembly of the Intermountain kit for CN 382001, a Cylindrical Grain 4 Bay covered hopper, grey, with red CN noodle and lettering.

I have 4 such Intermountain kits (CN 382001, CN 377990, ALNX 396478, ALPX 628114) and am considering assemblying all of them at the same time. The idea is that since they are all the same, except for the color and lettering, I can become more efficient with each step as a result of repeating the same step for all four of them. However I must be very careful to keep the pieces for each kit in its appropriate box at all times.

The first step involves separating roof from the sprues, which is fairly difficult as the connections are quite solid. This step also suggests adding weights to the base. I measured the length (7.5") and determined that I should add about 1 3/4 oz to each car. I recently bought some weights for this purpose and have added 7 weights (each 1/4 oz) to the base of CN 382001. They have a sticky base and are easily attached to the inside of the hopper base. The base is then glued to the body. This complete process took me about 30 minutes for CN 382001.

As an aside, my data base indicates that I should have one more kit of the same type, this one had number ALPX 628489 and was blue with a Take an Alberta Break - Pincher Creek logo on the side. But I cannot find it. I have a vague memory of having taken it to a hobby store and trading it for the Lethbridge car. I will assume that is a good memory until it shows up.

2:00 PM

I have now completed step 1 for all 4 kits. Total time on this activity today: 2 hours. I have always enjoyed working with models, and today was no exception. I already feel that I am making progress on 4 different cars.
