Major progress on my use of DCC. I have carefully read the MRC Prodigy Wireless Manual as well as the QSI Diesel Locomotive Operation Manual.
As a result of this, I learned how to reset the settings for locomotive 3 (the default setting for my CN 6700 5-axle passenger C-Liner diesel unit). This had the effect of increasing the volume of the bell to that when I first ran the locomotive, and which had somehow been reset to a very low volume that was hardly audible. Great. I have been wanting to do this for some time.
Now to highlight a few of the important points from the manuals.
MRC Prodigy Wireless Manual
1. Getting Started
- The battery voltage level in the handheld cab should be above 4 volts at all times (the maximum voltage is 5.5). This should be checked at the beginning of each session.
- To recharge the batteries, simply plug the cable from the power pack into the bottom of the handheld cab.
- The Prodigy Wireless system does NOT support non-decoder equipped locos. This means that all of my locos must have a decoder installed.
2. Operation
- To select a loco, first press the LOCO key. Use the numeric keypad to enter the loco address. Press ENTER. The Cab will automatically remeber the loco address for later recall. The usual default for a new locomotive is 3. This works for my CN 6700 diesel loco.
- Accessory functions F1 - F9 are accessed by pressing the appropriate numeric key.
- Here are the basic functions for my CN 6700 loco as given in the QSI sound decoder manual:
- F0 - headlight
- F1 - Bell
- F2 - Horn
- F3 - Coupler crash (I need to learn to press this key when coupling and uncoupling)
- F4 - Cooling Fans
- F5 - Dynamic Brakes
- F6 - Initiate Doppler Effect
- F7 - Squealing Brakes
- F8 - Audio Mute
- F9 - Heavy Load
- Press the SPD STEP button repeatedly until you see the desired speed steps setting (it usually should be set to 128). Then press ENTER. This matches the throttle to the decoder.
- To save the last 5 locos in use for the next operating session
- recall back the the 5 locos you wish to use in your next session
- make sure all functions are OFF for each loco
- make sure the throttle is set to 0 for each loco
- then press the SAVE key.
- turn off the power on the side of the handheld Cab
- shut down the power to the DCC system (i.e. unplug it).
- To reset all CV's to Factory Default Values
- set CV 49 to 128 (i.e. press PROG CV ON MAIN key, then press 4 and 9. Press Enter. Then press128 and press ENTER)
- set CV 50 to 255
- set CV 56 to 113. You will hear the word "Reset" when the step is completed.
