Thursday February 14, 2008 7:20 PM Lethbridge, Alberta

My first task was to stabilize the base for the wooden trestle.

I then began running diesel c-liner CN 6700 over various mainline routes. The objective was simply to verify that there were no problems with the track or the wiring.

At the same time I developed a better appreciation of the characteristics of different routes. I have identified the 38 turnouts that are on the mainline tracks with yellow post-its so that I can refer to each turnout by a number.

Even numbered routes refer to east-bound trains, odd numbered routes refer to west-bound trains.

Route 1: Transcontinental West

Leave Coaldale West, heading west. T13 and T11 are open, T9 - T1 are all closed.
There is one passing siding (T13 closed, T9 open).
Arrive Coaldale East.

I ran this route 4 times with no problems. I had the throttle set at 20 while in Coaldale, and then set it at 40 for the remainder of the route. The bell was ringing while in Coaldale.

Route 2: Transcontinental East

Leave Coaldale East, heading east. T1 - T9 are all closed. T11 and T13 are open.
There is one passing siding (T9 open, T13 closed).
Arrive Coaldale West.

I ran this route twice with no problems. I had the throttle set at 20 while in Coaldale, and then set it at 40 for the remainder of the route. The bell was ringing while in Coaldale.

Route 4: Local East (Coaldale East - Queenston - Pine Ridge - Coaldale West)

Leave Coaldale East, heading east. T1 - T3 closed, T4 open, T14 closed. Queenston. T15 - T16 open, T17 - T18 closed, Pine Ridge. T19 open, T20 - T23 closed, T24 open, T5 open, T6 - T8 closed, T9 open, T10 closed, T12 - T13 closed, Coaldale West.

I ran this route once with no problems.

Route 6: Local East (Coaldale East - Queenston - Pine Ridge - Prairie Dog - Pine Ridge - Coaldale West)

Leave Coaldale East, heading east. T1 - T3 closed, T4 open, T14 closed. Queenston. T15 - T16 open, T17 - T18 closed, Pine Ridge. T19 open, T20 - T23 closed, T24 closed, T25 open, Prairie Dog. T26 - T29 closed, T30 open, T18 open, T19 open, T20 - T23 closed, T24 open, T5 open, T6 - T8 closed, T9 open, T10 closed, T12 - T13 closed, Coaldale West.

I ran this route once with no problems. I had to change Turnout 18 to open on the second pass through it.

Route 8: Local East (Coaldale East - wooden trestle - Jasper - Coaldale East)

Leave Coaldale East, heading east. T1 - T5 closed, T6 open, T32 - T33 closed, wooden trestle. T34 open, Jasper, T35 - T37 closed, T38 open, T10 open, T9 open, T8 -T7 closed, T6 closed, T5 - T1 closed. Coaldale East.

The first time I ran this I experienced a few temporary shorts while crossing the trestle, but these did not occur again. I also had a short on the back track in Jasper but this also disappeared without further action. I will keep an eye on both areas. I also noticed that the track is very close to the water barrels on the trestle.

I had to change Turnout 6 to closed on the second pass through it.

The trick to having a calm operating session is to set all of the turnouts before beginning the trip and then focus on the turnouts that will need changing during the route.
