Daley Train Log

I spent about an hour earlier this afternoon playing with alternative ways of arranging the track in Jasper. This is much easier than in real life since I can put the track anywhere I want and then build the buildings to fit the layout. Here is the plan as I now envisage it:
I now have a sense of where I want to locate the Coal Loading Tower. If I stay with this idea, I will need 3 right turnouts and 1 left turnout, all electronic (they are too far in from the edge of the table to easily use a hand throw). The Coal Loading Tower is at the back. The cards all indicate potential buildings. I have no idea at the moment what industries I should have here, but the criterion will be to have some connection with at least one other location.
In addition to these industries, I have a kit for a Water Tank (which I bought many years ago).
I have never made a wooden kit before so this will be another learning experience. My first impression is that this will be much more difficult than working with plastic.
Here are a couple of quotes from the instruction sheets:
"Your water tank was a structure found on most North American railroads operating in areas where prolonged cold spells would freeze water in a conventional tank. In effect, it was really only a regular water tank enclosed in an octagon shaped structure, with a heater placed underneath to keep the water flowing."
Here are two web sites with additional information (I googled railway water tank cold weather):

There are 54 steps in the instructions. I think this may take awhile to complete. The instructions recommend painting all of the components before assembly. They also suggest using white glue and applying it with a toothpick. This entire process promises to be an adventure. But I am looking forward to it. I am curious to see what the final product looks like. If I like it, I may try to buy more wooden kits.
As is often the case, the pre-step involves buying something. In this case I need to see if I can find a small spray can of red-brown paint to paint the wood before I begin putting everything together.
The next step is to visit my hobby store and see about paint (red-brown for the Water Tower, sand for the Coaling Tower), as well as electrical turnouts (3 left, 1 right) for Jasper.
