Saturday April 24, 2010 Lethbridge, Alberta

8:00 am

I have just shaved off the inside ends of the stairs on my GTW caboose. It now runs fine around the curves. This only took a few minutes once I knew what I needed to do.

I have identified 3 locations where I could insert a road crossing and then set up a set of flashing signal lights and barriers.

I am going to back off on the idea of a fully functioning CTC signalling system. From the little I have read so far this involves using a computer to control the lights (and possibly the trains). This is definitely in the future, if at all.

9:00 am

A review of the JMRI and MRC web sites indicate that JMRI does not work with MRC DCC systems. However MRC is now providing an alternative to JMRI software, but this alternative (which is free) will only run on a Windows computer. Thus it looks like I will need a small laptop if I want to get involved in this.

It is not clear from the information on the MRC web site whether the software will work with the System 7 version of Windows. I have sent an email to MRC asking about this. I will also need to purchase a wireless computer interface ($75.) in order to communicate with the DCC system.
