A. Morning Musings

The mornings are getting a bit crisp.

I am going to have to make the patio furniture a high priority as it is beginning to get too cool for the finish to dry. I hope to cut the cedar boards into slats this morning. I may even begin sanding the frame for one chair, just to confirm that I have the overall process under control. I need to revisit the lumber yard to buy some special screws for attaching the chair backs to the frames. I am still planning to only glue the seat slats to the frame.

We now have begun the process of selling our 1992 Toyota Camry. The classified ad should appear in tomorrow's paper, and maybe even in today's. This all takes time.

I also want to try using my GPS system while walking around Nicholas Sheran Park, and while doing my circuit in the coulee. I am curious to see what the display looks like.

B. Actual Learning Activities

7:10 am

I just checked the Lethbridge Herald online to see if my ad for the Camry is viewable. Nope. I guess their statement that it takes 2 days before the ad appears is accurate, although I don't see why it couldn't be much faster. I assume this also means that it will not be in this morning's paper.

I have also just realized that the battery in my GPS is low. This is not a problem when I am using it in a car, but it is a problem if I want to try it while walking. The only way I know to charge it up is to plug it into the car while I am driving. A good reason to visit the lumber yard for those screws. I have 6 backs (4 chairs and 2 for the tete-a-tete), each with 5 slats, each requiring 2 screws giving 6 x 5 x 2 = 60 screws.

8:00 PM

It took 2 hours to buy a few screws for the patio furniture. I ended up visiting three different stores and talking to three different experts before finally finding some that were the right size as well as being suitable for use with cedar. But after that I really kicked into high gear. I was able to rip all of the boards to the desired width and then cut those into the proper lengths for all of the seats and backs for the 4 chairs and the tete-a-tete. I have also removed all of the slats of one chair and have sanded the remaining frame. The next step is to attach the new slats and then it will be ready for the first coat of finish. I have verified that my approach is going to work and now it is just a matter of more sanding and the attaching of slats. Then the three coats of finish. And repeat the process 6 times.
