A. Morning Musings

Today will be a repeat of yesterday. I have two activities planned for today. One is to sand the second coat of finish on the patio table and to then apply the third coat. The second activity is to drive to Fort Macleod and pick up some equipment for the genealogical society.

I am finding that the "2-loop" walk to be a bit strenuous. The walk itself is fine, but I then find that I am dragging for the rest of the day. I may try a 1-loop later today.

B. Actual Learning Activities

2:00 PM

The second coat of finish is still slightly tacky, so I am holding off applying the third coat until it is fully dry - maybe tomorrow.

Rather than attempting to sand down the slats on the chairs, I am looking at the possibility of replacing them. Here is a photo of one such chair with one of the slats removed.

chair

There are a total of 65 slats which, if I have done my arithmetic properly, will require 13 1x3 boards, each 8 feet long. I am going to try glueing each slat to the frame instead of using a screw. Since the slats will have almost no stress on the join, and if I glue them to the frame before I add the finish (so the glue is binding wood to wood), I think that should hold. This will then mean adding the three coats of finish to the slats after they are mounted on the chair which is slightly less convenient than finishing the slats first and then adding them to the chair. As the photo shows, I will also have to sand down and refinish the arms.

We had a successful trip to Fort Macleod, so that activity is now complete.

8:00 PM

Another first for me. I am back from my walk in the coulee. But this time I had my first close encounter with a rattlesnake. Since I have never seen a rattlesnake in the 23 years that I have lived here I was not watching the trail when I suddenly heard a rattle and a hiss. I turned around and there was the snake, coiled and ready to strike, but about 5 feet away and, I think, out of striking range. I had walked right by it before it reacted. The trail is about 4 feet wide at that point and I was already a couple of feet past it and on the opposite side of the trail to where is was coiled, just off the edge of the trail. It did not appear to be a particularly large snake, but it certainly made me cautious for the rest of the walk. If I had been walking on the other side of the trail I would likely have been in a bit of difficulty.
