A. Morning Musings

The coffee is almost ready.

Today we pick up our 2009 Toyota Camry. This will be the fourth new vehicle that we have purchased in our lifetime. The first was a Plymouth Barracuda in 1969, followed by a Toyota Corolla in 1988, and a Ford F150 truck in 1999. We are not exactly high rollers.

Now to see if I can indicate where we want to go in my new Garmin nuvi 850 and have it determine the route and tell us when to turn where. We will use manual over-ride if it looks like we will not find our car.

We are home with a new Camry sitting in the driveway. The GPS system was impressive. We made a couple of deviations from the recommended route and it immediately "recalculated" the new route to still arrive at the destination. One cute glitch was that the voice command for DR was "doctor" instead of "drive". Thus the command "turn right on Scenic Dr" sounded a bit weird. The maps are slightly out of date both with regard to new shops as well as for shops that no longer exist, but this was expected. It works well when the operator of the GPS system is the passenger (aka navigator) but it is fine if there is only the driver so long as the route is calculated before one begins driving. As with everything, the trick is to use it often so that one develops the "habit" of automatically using it rather than having to think about it.
