I have learned a tremendous amount of Canadian history while reading this book. It covers the critical period from about 1820 to 1900 and describes in detail the life of one particular tribe of Plains Cree natives under the leadership of Chief Ahtahkakoop. Having read the book, I am convinced that Ahtahkakoop deserves to be mentioned in ALL Canadian histories of this period as one of the critical leaders during a time of incredible change and hardship.

It is the level of detail and the extensive use of primary sources that sets this book apart, and for those reasons I found it to be a fascinating read.

I would rate this book as 4 our of 5.
