A. Morning Musings

The forecast for the next 5 days is summer. Fantastic.

The last few days have been busy with reality activities rather than my efforts at Learning. Yesterday I took a real time-out and watched the extra round of the US Open golf tournament. It was superb entertainment but it took much of the day. There are such days.

Here are a few websites that have occupied my spare time during the last couple of days:

GPS and geocaching

Alternative rv possibilities

I am feeling pretty confident about getting involved in geocaching. Much less so about downsizing our 5th wheel to a truck camper. But it is fun to compare the alternatives.

B. Actual Learning Activities

8:00 PM

We just spotted an American Goldfinch at our niger feeder. And at the same time an Evening Grosbeak was sitting on the fence. The Goldfinch was the first one we have seen in Alberta, but we have seen them before when we visited friends in Windsor a couple of years ago.

A Scientific Romance

Ronald Wright

This is the second novel this year that I have given a low rating. After reading his "A Short History of Progress" I was expecting much more from the author, even though this novel was written almost ten years earlier.

It was, and it was intended to be, a sequel to H. G. Wells' "The Time Machine". This time the protaganist only travels 500 years into the future, but the change is still remarkable. There has not been any violent war or nuclear catastrophe but there has been a general collapse of civilizations as the planet hit a point of unsustainability due to rapid climate change. Nothing too dramatic but much more realistic.

I would rate this story as 3.5 out of 5.
