A. Morning Musings

Our second blue sky morning. The temperature is right at the freezing point but I think that the flowers are okay.

I have slightly more focus this morning - only two books. One is "Indian Fall" which is an account of the last days of the Plains Cree and Blackfoot nations. This is a perfect sequel to "The Temptation of Big Bear" which I finished yesterday.

The second is actually one of my favorite books. It is a book on symmetry that I bought in 1980 when I was in Boston and happened to visit the MIT Bookstore. The book is called "Handbook of Regular Patterns" by Peter S. Stevens. I have often looked at the patterns in this book but have never actually tried to fully follow the textual explanation. Now that I am beginning to get my head around the topic of symmetry, and while I am waiting for a book on group theory that I ordered yesterday, I now want to have a serious look at this book. Before I am finished I will be able to look at the bricks in our patio and know exactly what kinds of symmetry are displayed.

There are also a number of Web sites that deal with this same topic.

Late yesterday, while googling the Web, I came across a reference to a book called "Indra's Pearls". I am planning on ordering it this morning.

Now to sit back and have a second cup.

B. Actual Learning Activities

9:00 PM

I spent a very good hour early in the morning reading the first two chapters of the Stevens book on symmetry.

Today was primarily spent cleaning out our garage and moving stuff over to the location for a garage sale sponsored by the genealogical society.
