A. Morning Musings

Another warm day. Then it is forecast to cool off.

We noticed a leak in the plumbing near our outdoor tap in the rear of the house. We will contact a plumber this morning and find out what is involved in getting it fixed. I have one more barrel to unwrap and place.

There is a bulletin board in the garage that I need to repair for the AGS. That may make a good project for today. It is supposed to remain fairly warm today so it should be good for outdoor activities.

I am starting the morning with a coffee and a slice of toast, but so far I am not identifying any Learning activities. I would like to read at least 2 more chapters today.

B. Actual Learning Activities

5:15 am

I read chapter 5 of "Paradise Lost" earlier this morning. Two thoughts occurred during that reading. The first was the value of having a brief synopsis at the beginning of each chapter. This would act as an Ausubelian advance organizer for the poetry that was to follow. The second was how dry and lifeless this summary was when compared to the actual content of the chapter. Nonetheless, it gave the reader a sense of what was to come and helped interprete the meaning of the poetry. I also noted that the complete work consists of 12 chapters, not 10, as I originally thought.

6:40 am

While browsing for a book by David Ausubel, I came across a web site that provides a free software program for building concept maps. I have just downloaded this program and am looking forward to using it, perhaps to build a map of my understanding of symmetry.

2:40 PM

Here is my first attempt at creating a concept map for symmetry (press the back arrow to return to this page).

10:00 PM

I went for a walk this evening, leaving at 8:30 PM. It was just getting dark as I returned home. I also fixed up the second barrel earlier this morning. However we had a plumber in to have a look at our leaking tap and he confirmed what were hoping he wouldn't. We will have to knock a hole in the ceiling of our shower stall (ceramic tiles) in order to reach the problem. I will start that tomorrow.
