A. Morning Musings

I got tied up yesterday between shoveling snow - and chipping ice off the sidewalk and driveway - and installing Dreamweaver CS3. Today I will try to shift to the other two activities that interest me: reading and playing with my model trains.

Model Trains: I need to run a locomotive and then a train over all of my mainline track to see if I can run continuously without any derails or shorts. I am not yet confident that I can do this without difficulties. I also need to add a couple of braces to the wooden trestle before I can run a train over it. Finally I need to lay the second track over the two steel bridges and to Lennox. I will also see if I can order a couple of turnout decoders for my mainline turnouts.

B. Actual Learning Activities

9:10 PM

I spent about 5 hours with my model train layout today. I began by simply cleaning up the tables. This involved reglueing thr foliage for many of the trees. I then added some foam to the base for the wooden trestle to stabilize it for when a train will pass over it. I then began running my c-liner diesel unit CN 6700 over a number of different routes, checking for possible shorts and possible derails. Finally, I added identification numbers to the 38 turnouts that are on my various mainline routes. This allows me to describe the actual status of the turnouts for different routes. I think I will be able to use this information later when the turnouts are connected to my DCC system. This was a very rewarding session as everything seems to be working. But I anticipate some difficulties as I begin to lengthen my train. I some cases this will be due to the track needing a slight adjustment, in other cases it will be the operating characteristics of the rolling stock.
