The beginning of a new month. We have been having a number of fairly violent thunderstorms in the last couple of weeks, including a severe hailstorm in Lsimore and a tornado in Dunoon. The forecast for the next few days is more "unsettled" weather, particularly in the late afternoon. We plan to drive up to Lismore this morning but will keep an eye on the sky and return early if it looks ominous.
I have updated all of the web pages for the end of October and the beginning of November. A quick glance at the October totals shows that Birding has become a larger activity, Drawing is beginning to appear (good!), and Mathematics has been slipping (not good). November has many more activities scheduled so I anticipate a decrease in the number of hours devoted to Learning acitivities.
Immediate | Description | Time |
---|---|---|
Literature | Complete reading "The Fugitive" vol 6 of "In Search of Lost Time" by Proust | 1 hr |
Birds | Birding near Lismore | 2 hr |
Science | Begin reading "Deep Simplicity" by John Gribbin | 2 hr |
I have completed reading and making my notes for "In Search of Lost Time: The Fugitive". Here is one quote that I found particularly interesting:
"We guess as we read, we create; everything starts from an initial error; those that follow (and this applies not only to the reading of letters and telegrams, not only to all reading), extraordinary as they may appear to a person whho has not begun at the same place, are all quite natural. A large part of what we believe to be true )and this applies even to our final conclusions) with an obstinacy equalled only by our good faith, springs from an origianl mistake in our premises " [p. 890]
This is a perfect summary of our software package, "The Puzzler"!
We are back from a birding trip to Lismore. We failed to see any new lifers but did see a Royal Spoonbill and a Black-headed Woodswallow for the first time on this trip. We also saw a few more Pink-eared Ducks.
I have read the first two chapters of "Deep Simplicity" by John Gribbin (2004). Now to think seriously about making a few notes.
