Tour: X-Ray and Computing Facility
This laboratory contains a Bruker-Nonius FR591 single crystal, X-ray diffraction system.
The atoms that make up molecules are so close together we cannot distinguish them using visible light.
Consequently, we expose crystals of proteins and nucleic acids to X-rays, which can distinguish individual atoms.
In order to generate a complete 3D structure of these molecules, we record hundreds to thousands of X-ray diffraction
images of the crystal from all possible angles.
This laboratory also contains multiple Linux workstations loaded with X-ray crystallographic software. The X-ray
crystallographic experiment does not directly yield a complete 3D structure. Instead, the X-ray crystallographic data
is subjected to a series of computational calculations that can lead to a complete 3D structure at atomic resolution.
