Biography

Dr Hester Jiskoot (BSc and MSc: Univ. of Amsterdam, PhD: Univ. of Leeds)
I am Associate Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Lethbridge, Canada, and my main research interests are ice flow dynamics, glacier surging, glacier-environment and glacier-climate interactions. I teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate students in glaciology, physical geography, Quaternary geology, glacial geomorphology, field techniques, environmental science and research methods.

In my research I use multiple approaches to tackle problems in glaciology, including field work, remote sensing, statistical and numerical analysis of glacier systems and glacier inventories, and analogue laboratory models. Since 1991, I have been a member and leader of glaciological expedition teams on and around glaciers and ice sheets in Greenland, Svalbard (Spitsbergen), Iceland, the Yukon Territory, Alaska, the European Alps, the Canadian Rocky Mountains, and the Himalayas.

I currently hold an NSERC University Faculty Award (UFA) and NSERC Discovery Grant, and have in the recent past also been funded through the Alberta Ingenuity Centre for Water Research, the University of Lethbridge Research Fund and through Provincial and Federal Student Employment Funding.

In 2005 I was invited by the Canadian Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources to advise about the role of glaciers in the water supply prognosis for western Canada. In 2007 I was on a 2-week speaking tour in Oregon and Idaho on invitation of the Canadian Consulate in Seattle. In 2009, I was elected as a member of the College of Fellows of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.
