English 2810: Final paper
The final paper for this class asks you to create and carry out a project involving Grammar. Exactly what this project is depends on your interests and learning goals. Some examples could include:
- An essay on some aspect of grammar — role in education; changing fashions in; popular perceptions of; synchronic variation (e.g. among socio-economic class, gender, ethnic, regional, professional, or other populations); diachronic variation in; and so on.
- Knowledge mobilization of grammatical information — i.e. some kind of work that develops a way for informing others about relevant grammatical information (podcasts, videos, syllabi, handbooks, style-guides, etc.)
- Creative projects that involve grammar in some essential way
- etc.
In other words, the project is an unessay, except one that is graded summatively: you will be evaluated on
- how well you define your goals for the project,
- how relevant and appropriate they are for the class, and
- how well you perform the task you set yourself.
As with any unessay, this is a very open project. Since it is summatively graded, I recommend that you plan ahead and meet with me to discuss your project if you have any doubts about its relevance or appropriateness.
Minimum Requirements
- Projects can be in any medium
- The work involved should be roughly equivalent to that involved in writing a second year essay of around 10-12 pages (3000~4000 words).
- Submission is via Moodle: if your project is not in a format that can be ingested by Moodle (e.g. it is a physical object, or a file-type or size that Moodle does not accept), you must upload a document containing the required introductory and met-descriptive material (see [4] below) and indicating where the actual object or file is located (e.g. “I will be giving it to you in class”; “it is available on YouTube at this URL”, etc.). Please ensure that any passwords or permissions that I require to review the work are also provided or properly set.
- For every project, the following introductory and meta-descriptive material must be submitted via Moodle (if your project is a document that can be submitted to Moodle, this material should go in the same document at the beginning; if your project cannot be submitted directly to Moodle, this is the material you upload to Moodle):
