Sunday: A day for relaxing. I begin a new novel. A few weeks ago I purchsed the first volume of a series by the French author Marcel Proust. The series is called In Search of Lost Time, and the first volume is Swann's Way. The entire series is a total of seven volumes! I will have a go at the first volume, and then decide if I wish to continue the series.

Proust was born in 1871 and died in 1922.

My first impressions are very positive. I have read about a hundred pages and am fascinated by two facts:

  1. There is very little action. The first 75 pages basically describe a young boy's thoughts and emotions as he tries to obtain a good night kiss from his mother. The book apears to have a pace that is consistent with the times it is describing - the turn of the century around 1900.
  2. I have never encountered sentences with so many commas (often over a dozen), and with such length. many times there are only two or three sentences on a page of tightly typed text. Yet the sentences flow! This is a new type of literature, but one that I am loving.
