Much of today was spent in Calgary. While there I managed a short visit to a bookstore. This time I restricted myself to 3 books:
- Italo Calvino "If on a Winter's Night a Traveller. (novel)
- Umberto Eco "Kant and the Platypus" (semiotics/psychology)
- David Hague "Fusion 3 Bible" (internet)
In the evening I completed reading Lessig's "Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace". Superb! I tried typing code and lessig into a search engine and found numerous sites reviewing or discussing the book. There is common
agreement that this is an important book. Here are three web sites on the book:
The latter review is particularly good.
Here is my own brief precis of the book. Code is law. The architecture of the web will go a long way toward determining the type of culture(s) we will have on this planet in the future. These architectures will
likely be determined by a mix of e-commerce concerns and government regulations. It is useful to think of the web as influenced by factors from:
- societal norms
- legal structures
- market forces
- architecture
However this is also useful for considering any societal entity. For example, public education or the U of L M. Ed. program. The role of architecture is very strong!
